Insect Apocalypse Gaining on Other Losses

Insect extinctions are occurring eight times faster than other mammals, birds, and reptiles. There are 17 times more insects than humans. Insects are one of the keystone species on the planet. Without insects, other losses accelerate exponentially. Insect habitat (native plants and grasslands) is less than 1% due to agriculture, chemicals, and urbanization. Plants rely on insects for pollination. Without pollination, seeds do not develop. If seeds don’t develop plants go extinct. Birds, reptiles, amphibians and fish rely on insects for food. If insects disappear, these species will also go extinct due to food loss. All life on earth won’t survive without insects.
