42 of the more than 850 species of bees in Canada are necessary to grow crops. Apples, tomatoes, blueberries, legumes, trees, shrubs, and wildflowers rely on pollination. No pollination means no food. Professor Laurence Packer says, “These kinds of declines in important pollinators are going to have cascading impacts throughout the entire ecosystem.” Declines in one bee species also means a loss of the flowering plants that bee species prefers. Researchers found the level of the bees occurrence has fallen by 70%. Similar declines in bumblebees are occurring worldwide.
